The IEA forecast that coal would fall from 58 per cent of electricity generation in the Asia Pacific to just 9 per cent by 2040, with a 4.5 per cent average annual decline this decade.
The ANZ bank joined well over 100 other banks around the world in refusing to fund new coal projects, following on the heels of similar announcements by major banks in Japan.
